牛頭刨床主要用于單件小批生產(chǎn)中刨削中小型工件上的平面、成形面和溝槽。
中小型牛頭刨床的主運動(見機床)大多采用曲柄搖桿機構(gòu)(見曲柄滑塊機構(gòu))傳動，故滑枕的移動速度是不均勻的。
大型牛頭刨床多采用液壓傳動，滑枕基本上是勻速運動。
滑枕的返回行程速度大于工作行程速度。
由于采用*刨刀加工，且在滑枕回程時不切削，牛頭刨床的生產(chǎn)率較低。

牛頭刨床主要有普通牛頭刨床、仿形牛頭刨床和移動式牛頭刨床等。
普通牛頭刨床(見圖)由滑枕帶著刨刀作水平直線住復(fù)運動，刀架可在垂直面內(nèi)回轉(zhuǎn)一個角度，并可手動進給，工作臺帶著工件作間歇的橫向或垂直進給運動，常用于加工平面、溝槽和燕尾面等。
仿形牛頭刨床是在普通牛頭刨床上增加一仿形機構(gòu)，用于加工成形表面，如透平葉片。
移動式牛頭刨床的滑枕與滑座還能在床身(臥式)或立柱(立式)上移動，適用于刨削特大型工件的局部平面。
一種刨床，利用住復(fù)運動的刀具切割已固定在機床工作平臺上的工件〔一般用來加工較小工件)。
